A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF BALDWIN PARK OPPOSING
APARTHEID IN SOUTH AFRICA
WHEREAS, South Africa's apartheid system
represents legalized racism in its most brutal form, in
which the South African apartheid state is supported by a
highly repressive police apparatus; and
WHEREAS, the conditions under which South
Africa's black population must live are deteriorating
rapidly; and
WHEREAS, blacks comprise over 72% of South
Africa's population but are not permitted to vote and must
live on only 13% of the country's total land area; and
WHEREAS, blacks in the rural areas suffer from
malnutrition and a high infant mortality rate due to
deplorable living conditions which have been worsened by
the continent-wide drought; and
WHEREAS, black children in South Africa receive
less educational assistance than their white counterparts,
and as adult employees earn only 22 cents for every dollar
that a white South African employee earns; and
WHEREAS, blacks are subject to arrest for legal
offenses that do not apply to whites; and
WHEREAS, the present policies are in direct
conflict with the principles of basic human dignity and
have led to a state of disorder throughout the country.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City
Council of the City of Baldwin Park does hereby express its
opposition to the repressive apartheid policies of South
Africa and commends the City of Los Angeles and other large
and influential public and corporate entities for the
actions they are taking to expedite political reform in
that country.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the the City Clerk
shall certify to the adoption of this Resolution and shall
transmit a certified copy to the Office of Tom Bradley,
Mayor of the City of Los Angeles.
