HomeMy WebLinkAbout1989 065 CC RESO1989 065 CC RESO8f;¢fôP »RESOLUTION NO. 89-65 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BALDWIN PARK SUPPORTING A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT RELATIVE TO THE BURNING OF THE AMERICAN FLAG IN PROTEST TO POLITICAL ISSUES WHEREAS/ the flag of the United States of America has been a banner of hope for generation upon generation of Americans and indeed, people throughout the world, and WHEREAS/ this flag has served as a symbol of freedom during both peace and war time throughout the history of our nation, and WHEREAS, a recent decision of the United States Supreme Court supports the American tradition of freedom of thought but erodes the tradition of respect by which our flag has long been held; and WHEREAS/ the City Council of the City of Baldwin Park urges a renewal of this tradition and a dedication to the struggle for freedom which commenced in 1776; NOW, THEREFORE/ THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BALDWIN PARK DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS.: Section 1. That all citizens of the United States of America should hold the flag of our country in the highest respect. Section 2. That Congress and the States should expedite the approval of a constitutional amendment protecting the flag of the United States of America from acts of desecration. Section 3. That the Mayor be directed to send copies of this resolution to the President of the United States and to our Congressional Delegation.
