A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF BALDWIN PARK SUPPORTING
A RE-EXAMINATION OF ALTERNATIVES TO
THE AERIAL SPRAYING OF MALATHION TO
IRRADICATE THE MEDITERANEAN FRUIT FLY
WHEREAS, the Mediterranean fruit fly Medfly) poses a severe
threat to California agriculture, and;
WHEREAS, the Los Angeles County Agricultural Commission is
charged with developing and implementing programs to protect
Los Angeles County from the infestation of the Medfly, and;
WHEREAS, the Los Angeles County Agricultural Commission has
relied heavily on mass aerial spraying of malathion, and;
WHEREAS, concern has bean raised by Baldwin Park residents
and others over the health effects and effectiveness of the
present program, and;
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Baldwin Park is also
concerned with the repeated sprayings and believes that every
available alternative to such sprayings should be seriously
considered by the Commission.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BALDWIN PARK
DOES HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. That the Los Angeles County Agricultural
Commission should re-examine the present policy of repeated
aerial spraying of malathion as the principal means of
irradication of the Medfly.
Section 2. That the Los Angeles County Agricultural
Commission should expand its efforts to develop and implement
alternatives to aerial malathion spraying.
Section 3. That the Los Angeles County Agricultural
Commission should re-evaluate the costs, benefits and risks
associated with the present policy.
Section 4. That the City Manager will be responsible for
communicating these concerns and requests to the Los Angeles
County Agricultural Commission along with a copy of this
resolution.
