HomeMy WebLinkAbout1996 002 CC RESO1996 002 CC RESO(Ìì³_ RESOLUTION NO. 96-2 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BALDWIN PARK SUPPORTING FUNDING OF THE LEGAL SERVICES CORPORATION TO PROVIDE LEGAL SERVICES TO THE POOR WHEREAS, equal justice is fundamental to the American system of government under laws; and WHEREAS, the inability to afford legal counsel effectively denies access to justice to individuals with legal needs; and WHEREAS, the Legal Services Corporation has been effective in providing legal assistance to those who would be unable to afford legal counseling matters; and WHEREAS, the continued operation of the Legal Services Corporation is essential to the guarantee of equal justice for poor people; and WHEREAS, Legal Services Corporation guarantees in Baldwin Park are committed to the provision of legal ass istancZ to properly stricken communities, Including assistance in housing, governmental benefits, family law, debtor/creditor law, consumer rights and other basic legal rights: and WHEREAS, the commitment to equal access to justice is demonstrated by our own local legal services program and Is being carried out by Legal Services Corporation grantees across the nation; and WHEREAS, continued funding at present levels is essential to provide legal services to the poor in Baldwin Park Znd across the natbn: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Baldwin Park strongly supports continued funding for the Legal Services Corporation at the present funding level to allow the Legal Services Corporation and its grantees to meet the legal needs of people who cannot afford legal representation.
