HomeMy WebLinkAbout2003 076 CC RESO2003 076 CC RESO(Ìì½MRESOLUTION NO. 2003-076 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BALDWIN PARK URGING GOOD FAITH NEGOTIATIONS BETWEEN THE UNITED FOOD AND COMMERCIAL WORKERS UFCW) UNION AND SUPERMARKET EMPLOYEES WHEREAS, the United Food and Commercial Workers Union represents over 70,000 grocery clerks in Southern California; and WHEREAS, the Union's contract with many of the supermarket chains expired on October 5, 2003; and WHEREAS, negotiations on a new contract have been unsuccessful, resulting in a strike; and WHEREAS, the grocery industry, nationally and especially in Southern California, has traditionally paid good wages with an attractive health care package. The average wage and salary pay for full time hourly workers in major Southern California chains is $32,386, including a complete benefit package, with health care coverage for employees and dependents; and WHEREAS, there are a number of factors needed to develop customer loyalty including: 1) quality merchandise offered at a reasonable price; and 2) employees who have a complete understanding of organizational loyalty. Southern California grocery markets, even with competition, have consistently catered to the consumer in providing affordable products and the employees of those same markets have always demonstrated their loyalty in providing excellent service to the consumers who have come to depend upon their skills within the grocery industry; and WHEREAS, the employees who work in community supermarkets are also neighbors whose children attend local schools, neighbors who frequent other community businesses, neighbors who attend and participate with the local religious community and neighbors who have deep concerns for the well being of their local communities; and WHEREAS, good faith negotiations between the parties is crucial in order to come to an agreement for a new contract and end the current strike. NOW. THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BALDIWN PARK HEREBY RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. That the striking members of the United Food and Commercial Workers including the Locked Out" UFCW members are in accord with the collective bargaining process, and the workers have clearly demonstrated their displeasure with the proposed take away" in their benefit package totaling nearly fifty percent 50%), and have throughout their previous contracts given up a portion of their wages to enjoy this benefit. That the Baldwin Park City Council be on record as supporting no reduction in the health care package for striking members of the United Food and Commercial Workers. SECTION 3. That the Baldwin Park City Council encourages both parties to return to the collective bargaining table in order to seek an equitable solution for the total good of the entire community. SECTION 4. That the City Clerk shall forward a copy of this resolution to UFCW Local 1448, Western Region, P.O. Box 9000, Claremont, CA 91711-9000. SECTION 5. That the City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this resolution and enter it into the original book of resolutions on file in the City Clerk's Office.
