A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF BALDWIN PARK DECLARING ITS
OPPOSITION TO THE PROPOSSED CUTS IN
HIGHER EDUCATION BY THE GOVERNOR OF
THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA.
WHEREAS, Income for the State of California began to decrease in 2001; and
WHEREAS, the State budget has fallen out of balance the past two years and
large deficits have been carried over from year to year; and
WHEREAS, the Governor's proposed budget would reduce funding to the State's
Institutions of higher education; and
WHEREAS, the Governor's proposed budget calls for tuition fee increases at the
Community Colleges; and
WHEREAS, Cal State, and UC Campuses will impose a tuition fee increase of
10% for undergraduate students; and
WHEREAS, the Governor's proposed budget also calls for tuition fee increases
of 40% for graduate students; and
WHEREAS, the Governor's proposed budget would call for a 10% reduction in
enrollment of new freshmen; and
WHEREAS, the Governor's proposed budget would reduce the monies and
funding available for various state financial aid programs including grants, loans and
scholarships; and
WHEREAS, the new proposed budget will significantly affect the academic
success of lower income and minority students; and
WHEREAS, many of the students from the Baldwin Park who would be impacted
by this budget proposal are low income.
NOW, therefore, be it resolved that the City Council of the City of Baldwin Park
does hereby oppose the proposed budget and urges our residents to notify Governor
Schwarzenegger and their elected officials that they oppose the cuts to higher
education.
