HomeMy WebLinkAbout1972 067 CC RESO1972 067 CC RESO(ÌìþlÔÏRESOLUTION NO- 72-67 A RESOLUTION OF WE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BMJNIN PARK URGING THAT ALL APPROPRIATE ACTION BE TAKEN TO ASSURE THAT THE SUPPLY OF NATURAL US TO LOS ANGELES COUNTY IS NOT REDUCED MEREAS, Los Jtageles County ore than twelve years ago was the first jurisdiction in the nation to outlaw the burning of high sulfur fuel oil for the purpose of controlling air pollution; and IMEREAS, pOMer plants in Las Angeles Cowty rely on natural gas and low sulfur fuel oil to elimnate air pollution consisting of 455 tons per day of sulfur dioxide, 40 tons per day of particulates, and 205 tons per day of oxides of nitrogen; and MHEREAS, no other technologically feasible eans to acccplish this control strategy is available; and WEREAS. the El Paso Natural Gas Co^any presently is seeking approval of the Federal Power Ct—ission for a plan for curtailing deliveries of natural gas, which plan will either severely reduce or cc^letely elimnate the SBOUII of natural gas available to power plaits in Los Angeles County; and MEREAS, the world supply of low sulfur fuel oil is tenuous and there is a strong likelihood that if natural gas is co^iletely curtailed, power plants in Los Angeles County will have to bum as uch as 70 illion barrels of high sulfur fuel oil yearly; and MEREAS, the burning of large quantities of high sulfur fuel oil will result in ataospheric pollution of such severity as to damge property and cause illness; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the President of the United States, wber of Congress representing Los Angeles County and the Enviromental Protection Agency be called upon to take all appropriate action to assure that the supply of natural gas to Los Angeles County is not reduced; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this resolution.
