Russell Blewett, Mayor of Baldwin Park, CA. 2/13/73 experience. Like the Olympic Games, for the hearing, the World Games for the Deaf are held every four years^ but the USA WGD participants do not have the backing of tBe nfttional""brganizations or big corporations and must rely on hometown sentiment in supporting the members of the United States team. Each community is responsible, in this traditional method of supporting tHeF tea®, Tor getting its own athlete to the games. It will take $2,000 for each athlete who attends and participate in the Malrno Games. The money needed is to be raised locally to send outstanding deaf athletes to this post important event. The fund,s are expected to be avallable^by April 1. 197 3 f Qo as to 6^® us sufficient time to get everything ready for the 12th Games. In communities throughout the nation the deaf athletes are being aided by IQQ^ oivic^orggnizations interested in gfving their own a chance at fame for themselves and their community. The USA 73 Maimo team MUST rely wholly on the generosity of the American public to secure the funds needed for training, transporting, clothing and housing these athletes, previous experience has shown that these funds are best raised on an individual basis» with the fund drive being conducted for each athlete in and around his own community. In many countries participation in World Games for the Deaf competition is so Highly regarded and means so much to national prestige that the jQaense of the team is borne by governments. In the United States, however, the sports-loving public finances the team and its individuals on a purely democratic basis, free from government control. Necessary funds are raised through general contributions. We are very much concerned because James Walter Heineck said he has been having a vary difficult time to raise the $2,000 neeTded for his trip to Sweden this summer. As of now he has raised about $500. Jim really needs a sponsor or committee of important people in Baldwin Tark to spearhead the fund raising campaign in his behalf. How they can help. There are several ways 1) Spread the word about Jim Reineck making the USA squad in track and his need of $2,000. 2) Work through local civic and professional groups, clubs and lodges to raise funds. 3) Individual contributions, 4) Seek out business groups and industries in Baldwin Park and nearby towns that might help. 5) Arrange a big fund raising dinner and dance for the benefit of Jim. This does work very well in different parts of the country. I want you to know that I am optimistic about the whole thing as I have been getting wonderful news every day, yes EVERY DAY, in regard jyo many fund drives for individual Maimo participants now underway all over the country. It is still too early now, but several of our USA athletes have already hit the $2,000 mark each. Russell Blewett, Mayor of Baldwin Park, CA^ 2/13/73 presented to Held! Lin Zimmer, at the first oity council meeting of the New Year, January 2, 1973, and also copies of those two newspaper clippings * As a result of this, the fund drive to send Heidi to Maimo has passed the $1,700 mark as of January 20, 1973" Heidi no doubt will make it very soon or may have made it already by now. Those clippings are two of those wonder- ful newspaper clippings I have been getting these days/ from all over the country. The individual drives all over the country in 1969 were terrific. So many communities showed that they were behind their Yugo 69 athletes which led me to believe that there is plenty of old-fashioned Americana left, It is times like this when you truly realize that we are Americans and that people are still people" and will band together for a common good cause o Old-fashioned Americana is still around. I still believe people in Baldwin Park and nearby towns will and can support Jim, if an intense and follow- through campaign is maintained. Won't you participate in a community venture to send James Walter Reineck to Maimo? And we would be most happy if you would start the ball rolling by forming a committee to be known as Jim Reineck Deaf Olympic Committee" to conduct the fund red. sing campaign. At the National WGD Trials in Morganton, N^CLi, over $00 top deaf athletes from all parts of the country including Hawaii participated in track and field, swimming 50-meter pool), yestling, volleyball and tennis, Jim earned the right to make the USA squad again when he won third place in the high jump at 6 feet, 3 indies. The winner did 5-5 and sec'oncPplaee finisher at 6-^. Sixteen fop deaf high jumpers participated in the trials, A6^^l65"-Eound popular athlete, Jim, sure is looking forward to competing T3r the^'UnIted States for the aecpnd_time at Maimo. In 1969 atjaelc^rade^ Yugoslavia, Jim won a bronze medal when he placed third_at 6 feeE7~2 indheso Now he is setting hIsHrttInd airdrHeart on a program of constant practice and study so that he can improve himself in every possible way, and is making a real effort to build his body up to peak condition before he reports for training camp at Gallaudet College in Washington, DC, where he graduated a few years ago. His ambition is to Jump 6 feet and 6 inches at Maimo. If so, this would be a new World Deaf record. Selecting a basic squad ahead of time allows opportunity and time to round up the necessary wherewithal. We operate on a shoestring or two and any and all heJp you can offer will be greatly appreciated by the USA Committee, AAAD, as well as James Walter eineck. Theu-eal tragedy would be fcf Jim were denied a chance to participate due to lack of the $2,000 needed for him to make tne Maimo trip. Thank you for your thoughtful attention to this. If you wish, Jim would be glad to see you for an interview. Do write him for an appointment. CC: Baldwin Park Chamber of Commerce Ut327 Ranona Boulevard Baldwin Park, CA 91706 James W.
