A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF BALDWIN PARK URGING
OPPOSITION TO PROPOSITION 15
NUCLEAR POWER INITIATIVE
WHEREAS, Proposition 15 will appear on the June 8th ballot;
and
WHEREAS/ Nuclear power plants have operated for several
years in California and elsewhere without harming the public?
and
WHEREAS, Proposition 15 has many complex provisions which
would be so difficult to meet that the nuclear industry would
be shut down in California; and
WHEREAS, Substituting oil and coal for nuclear power
would increase air pollution in California; and
WHEREAS, Development of solar and geothermal power for
large scale use probably will take many years; in the meantime,
California will need nuclear power to fill the gap which will
be caused by dwindling supplies of natural gas and reasonably
priced oil; and
WHEREAS, Congress is not likely to repeal the insurance
liability limitation which it has just extended for ten years;
and it is questionable whether utilities can waive the federally
imposed limit; and
WHEREAS, The 2/3 vote requirement for the legislative
determinations means that 14 Senators 1/3 of the Senate) could
block nuclear power use;
MOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of
the City of Baldwin Park hereby opposes Proposition 15 and
urges defeat of the Proposition by the voters of Los Angeles
County.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk be instructed
to forward a copy of this Resolution to the news media in the
San Gabriel Valley.
APPROVED and ADOPTED this 19th day of May, 1976.
