HomeMy WebLinkAbout1978 035 CC RESO1978 035 CC RESO(ÌìóŒRESOLUTION NO. 78-35 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BALDWIN PARK, CALIFORNIA, IN SUPPORT OF THE SUNDESERT NUCLEAR PROJECT AS ORIGINALLY PROPOSED IN THE NOTICE OF INTENT WHEREAS, San Diego Gas & Electric Company, Los Angeles Depart- ment of Water and Power, the State Department of Water Resources and the cities of Glendale, Pasadena, Anaheim, Burbank and Riverside have applied to the State Energy Resources Conservation and Development Commission for approval to build a nuclear power plant at a remote desert site in Biythe, California, called the Sundesert Nuclear Project, to serve the electric power needs of the State Water Project which supplies water to the San Diego region; and WHEREAS, the State Energy Resources Conservation and Develop- ment Commission has approved the site for the Sundesert Nuclear Project and has found that there exists a need for additional energy capacity during the mid-1980's for Southern California; and WHEREAS, the construction of this nuclear power plant in this remote site will reduce the Southern California region's dependence upon oil as a fuel for generation of electric power, thereby increasing the reliability of electric power supply by reducing dependence upon foreign oil which is subject to interruptions of supply due to international events beyond the control of state or local officials; and WHEREAS, the California Department of Water Resources is a participant in the Sundesert Nuclear Project and requires the energy which will be derived from the project to economically pump water to Southern Califor- nia; and WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern Califor- nia has a vital interest in the Sundesert Nuclear Project by reason of its water supply contract with the Department of Water Resources; and WHEREAS, the Sundesert Nuclear Project will produce power at the least cost to the consumer when contrasted to alter- native forms of generation; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Baldwin Park urges that all necessary steps be taken to approve, construct and commence operation of the Sundesert Nuclear Project as originally proposed in the Notice of Intent at the earliest possible date. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City of Baldwin Park urges that the State Energy Resources Conservation and Development Commission and the Legislature respec- tively recommend and enact an exemption for the Sundesert Nuclear Project, as orginally proposed in the Notice of Intent, from the current moratorium on the construction of new nuclear power plants which BIB] 37684-U01 1978-U02 035-U02 CC-U02 RESO-U02 LI3-U03 FO10488-U03 FO10731-U03 DO10933-U03 C6-U03 RESO-U03 3/3/2003-U04 ROBIN-U04 1978 035 CC RESO(ÌìóŒResolution No. 78-35 Page 2 resulted from the 1976 passage of the nuclear bills pursuant to the exemption mechanism provided by the Legislature in Assembly Bill 1852. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that upon adoption of this resolution by the City of Baldwin Park, the City Clerk be directed to forward a copy of this resolution to Senator Alfred Song, Assemblyman Joseph Montoya and Mayor Pete Wilson, City of San Diego.
